Have you ever wondered why there is a limit for your Twitter text story of only 140 characters? Though it is one of the best and easy way to communicate with the world there is 1 thing that keeps it behind the bars ‘the 140 characters’ limit. You might think that it is just a random number defined y some engineer working in twitter team. But the real reason is not that.

The reason is actually when twitter was first introduced to the world it was called as “Twitter”. It was launched in 2006 and at that time communication over mobiles was quite rare and there were fewer internet services available. Even the first ever touchscreen iPhone was one year away those days.

Due to the lack of smartphones, those days twitter designed the interface that supports the web over mobile phones and in those days the mobile phones had 140 character limit of a text and then if the text is more than that that will be forwarded in two parts so that is the reason why Twitter had 140 characters.

Twitter’s CEO and founder Jack Dorsey told the LA Times in 2009:

“The particular constraint of 140 characters was kind of borrowed […] most basic phones are limited to 160 characters before they split the messages. So in order to minimize the hassle and thinking around receiving a message, we wanted to make sure that we were not splitting any messages. So we took 20 characters for the user name and left 140 for the content. That’s where it all came from.”
