Since OnePlus 8/8Pro is a brand new Series not most of the users would think of tampering the device. Then what about yesteryear’s flagships, the OnePlus 7/7Pro? We believe there would exist plenty of folks craving for doing something daring such as rooting their OnePlus 7/7 Pro.

Given bootloader unlocking is the first step to enter into the world of custom development, here we’re with a guide on how to unlock the bootloader of the OnePlus 7/7 Pro. This could be useful for the folks mentioned above. So, let’s get started.

Unlock OnePlus 7/7 Pro Bootloader

As mentioned earlier, bootloader unlocking is fairly easy on OnePlus devices. Since both of the devices are nearly identical, minus some visual changes, the steps to bootloader unlock is the same.

Disclaimer: Bootloader unlock may erase your data. So backup all the necessary data before proceeding.

  1. First and foremost, go to Settings > About phone and tap Build number section 5-7 times repeatedly. Developer options should appear in your device’s system settings, where you can then enable OEM unlocking.
  2. Once the OEM Unlock is enabled from the Developer Option, enable the USB Debugging option from the same Developer Options settings.
  3. Now, turn on your PC and make sure Minimal ADB and Fastboot is installed on your system.
  4. Connect your smartphone to the PC via USB and set-up ADB terminal. Once the device is all set to receive ADB commands, input the below code in command prompt to make your device boot to bootloader/fastboot mode.

  5. Alternatively, you can use key combinations to get your device into fastboot mode. For that, press and hold Volume Up + Volume Down + Power button for a few seconds while your device is in off-state.
  6. Once your device has been booted into fastboot mode, it’s time to throw the commands which will really unlock your bootloader. Input the below commands via command prompt (make sure your device is successfully connected to PC in fastboot)

  7. Within 1-3 seconds, the bootloader of the device should be unlocked. Now, you can restart your smartphone or proceed with other daring activities such as rooting or installing the custom ROMs. Good Luck!

That’s how you’ll unlock the bootloader of an International/Carrier-Unlocked OnePlus 7/7 Pro. In case you own a T-Mobile variant, then the next subsection is for you.

Unlock T-Mobile OnePlus 7/7 Pro Bootloader

  1. Enable OEM to unlock and USB Debugging from the Developer Options just like how we did it earlier.
  2. Here onwards the method differs from the Internation variant. Get IMEI by dialling *#06# in your phone’s dialer. The IMEI code will show up. Note down or copy the code safely as it’s needed later when you apply for the OEM unlock from OnePlus online form.
  3. Reboot into fastboot mode on your device. Follow the same method given in the first section.
  4. Next, input the below code on command prompt. It’ll output a unique code. Note down the code as you’ll also need it for online unlock form.

  5. Visit OnePlus unlock form website, sign-in and apply for the bootloader unlock.
  6. You’ll be asked to enter the IMEI and the unique code obtained in step 4 in relevant fields.
  7. Once you submit the request, within around 2 weeks, you’ll receive should receive a flashable unlock token as a file (unlock_token.bin) within two weeks.
  8. Save the token in PC and input the below code.
    fastboot oem cust_code unlock_token.bin
  9. Finally, type fastboot OEM unlock to get your device bootloader unlocked.

Indeed, unlocking T-Mobile variant is quite a task. OnePlus shouldn’t be blamed for such extra efforts as it’s the Service Provider which mandates such security features.
